Many sorties were made by a number of orienteers during the Spring and Summer of 2007 delving into various Perthshire woodlands, forests and hill ground looking for candidate areas for the 2009 6-Days.  One of the areas, which was explored by Gareth Bryan-Jones and myself, was Tullochroisk – or to be more accurate, an extension of Tullochroisk to almost twice its existing size.  We both came away enthusing about the forest in the west of the area and impressed by the mainly open ground between it and the road, and despite some initial worries about the parking capacity, it became one of the preferred six areas.

When an area for the SOC was being sought, updating of Rannoch was an option; Newtyle Hill was considered, but it was decided to plump for Tullochroisk.

It encapsulates all that is good about Scottish orienteering areas.  The setting is hard to beat, with views over Loch Tummel and Rannoch to the north and the northern slopes of Schiehallion forming a southerly backdrop.  You will perhaps remember the existing area from the JK relays of 2000 or TAY’s SOL in 2003.  This area has hardly changed, but what will change is that around 8 permanent stiles will be erected over the big deer fence bisecting the area so the planners will have all the flexibility they need.

The additional area takes the map to over 5sq kms, but importantly adds some wonderful open conifer forest, (mainly pine and larch), along with more birch woodland and in the main very runnable open ground, so there is plenty of scope for top quality courses.

Jon Musgrave has mapped the area and his feedback on the new area is: ‘the extension south of the road is very interesting - large areas of limestone mean the vegetation is largely grassy or short heather rather than rank tough heather!  There are even a couple of small patches of limestone pavement.  The area is steep but the effort of climbing is made worth while by the interesting detail and the forest block in particular is wonderful - areas of fast runnable forest (with no brashings) and loads of contour shape and rock detail.  A worthy area for a Scottish Champs’.

The BOF mapping adviser’s comments are ‘Looks a great area’ and  Nice looking survey and area’.

So there is only one way to find out – come along.  I am sure you will not be disappointed.
