30 September: I’m still alive, just not doing much orienteering.
Back in the summer the Scottish 6 days took place in Speyside with Interløpers helping organise day 3.
Steve Terry took lots of pictures that you can see here. Steve has kindly said that Interlopers can use them but please remember that they are his copyright and shouldn’t be copied without his permission.
5 June: Scottish Schools
The Scottish Schools Orienteering Festival for this year was held at
the Carmichael Estate, Biggar.
Several Interlopers were taking part.
Our S4 Boys (Stephen Haley, Iain Cackette, Shaun Rogerson and Stuart
Watson) brought home the S4 team trophy for Firrhill High School for
the third year in a row (actually there was no trophy for them last
year, but this year they have a giant antler to fit into the school
cabinet!).
In the p7 boys race, Christopher Galloway came in 1st, with Mark Haley
2nd. Two other school mates also had spectacular runs, and between them
they won the p7 team event for Buckstone Primary.
In the p5/6 boys race, Matthew Galloway (p5) came in 2nd despite an error.
Samuel Galloway (p4), Cormac (p4) and Lewis Reid (p2) also took part. All
four will be able to compete in the p5/6 race again next year.

Championships 2006
Vogrie Country Park
A big thanks to all those club members who took the time and trouble to
come out and support the Club Championships today. Over 30 people turned
up and most of them actually ran on a day which turned out weather wise
to be very pleasant for orienteering.
Pre-match favourite, G. Ackland, stunned the assembled crowd, (Me, Lorna
and Colin) by returning after 20 minutes or so, mumbling something about
not having any energy but inside admitting defeat for once to such
skilled and devious planning. He was followed in shortly afterwards by a
rather disorientated B. Owen struggling to find the finish and being
encouraged to visit the last control but having none of it. He sloped
off muttering something about losing the will to live at No. 8. Julian
and Lucy Hall romped home first on White but not being club members we
just ignored them. Hannah and Mum were next back after the planner had
mistaken her for a junior Ackland. The white course runners were coming
back thick and furious with James and Mairi accompanied by various
parents and hangers on. Cheating Jane Ackland then set off having had
her map prised off her earlier when she had tried to sneak off to the
warmth of her car and plan her route choice in comfort. Mary came back
as first finisher on Green and actually thanked the planner which lifted
his spirits a bit. Next in was Pat ‘Granddad’ Squire who displayed a
somewhat flippant attitude to the set questions. No finishers on Blue by
this time and with Ackland’s capitulation it was expected that Mrs
Godfree might be first over the line but in fact it was a perspiring R.
Bloor who came in having enjoyed (?) the course but deliberately giving
supercilious answers to ensure he didn’t have to organise next year’s
championships. There was some close packing there afterwards with
Gillian, Pete, Jen and Pat coming in on Blue. Max and Dad returned after
a good effort on a what was probably a challenging course for the
youngster. A good attempt with the questions made them strong candidates
for silverware. Then the grumbling and moaning started imagine making us
cross the river twice , the sun was in our eyes for much of the time. I
was even asked by someone who shall remain nameless (but whose initials
are JA) whether I had any ESOC tendencies. You put a control on one
thicket . . . . . ! Steve Ambler was trying hard to be first out and
last in but failed to do so. Late starts from Fiona and Graeme would
ensure that he wasn’t last home. There was a distinct possibility that a
pregnant Mrs Cunnane would bring up the rear. The organising team were
getting a bit cold by this time and sent G. Ackland off a bit too early
to collect in controls as Ben and the Limping Leprechaun had to stop him
and grab one of them back. The lure of the cafe and a soft play area was
proving too much for some and most people headed down there for some
warming beverages. After picking up the last controls the difficult task
of selecting who was the actual winner remained. Some hasty formula for
questions answered and course factoring was jotted down on the back of a
control description sheet. Time wise the smart money seemed to be on Rob
and Mary but there a late run from Jen, and an even later one from
Granddad, put them into the frame. When the dust had settled though it
appeared that for swiftness of foot and agility of brain that Gillian
will have her hands on the Club Quaich. Long Live The Club Champion !
Many thanks again to Paul for being there (as he always is !), Robin for
all his work on the map, but mostly to Lorna and Colin for all their
help and stepping in to ensure things continued to run smoothly in the
planner’s absence in the run up to the event.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year !
Colin
16 December 2006: The latest laugh-a-minute newsletter is here
15 October 2006: Interløpers destroy the opposition! The last minute team of Stephen Haley, Paul Caban and Dave Godfree stormed to victory at the Night Harris relay at Dreghorn on Saturday evening. This unusual format sees the team all start together with 9 controls everyone has to go to and then an extra 20 controls that have to be visited by any team member, with the team time being the time of the third runner home. With Stephen getting a couple of extra controls, Paul the low down ones and Dave the high up ones the team timed their finishing to perfection with Stephen waiting just 3 minutes for Paul, followed 6 seconds later by Dave. With much relief we checked that we had been to all the controls, in a time of 42:58. This was a mere 35minutes ahead of the EUOC team in second place!
5 October 2006: The latest club newsletter is available here or from the newsletter page.
Good luck to all the Interløpers running at the World Cup finals in France this week: Scott and Murray for GBR and Toni for Ireland.
22 August 2006: A recent article in the Evenings News about orienteering featuring Ken Daly and Ann Haley is here and another article about World Bronze medallist Jamie Stevenson is here
The next club Monday run is on Monday 4th September from 104 Tryst Park, EH10 7HE. Running at 7pm prompt.
7 July 2006: Results from the street race at Buckstone on Wednesday evening have been posted on the results page. Thanks to Paul for planning and hosting and to Emily for organising the barbeque afterwards.
2 April 2006: Congratulations to the Interlopers Oldies team of Graeme Ackland, Rob Lee and Andy Kitchen on winning the M40 class at the British Relays. The second place jinx was in full force in the Men’s Open with our Norwegian Branch of BJ, Dan and Scott coming second and the second team of Anthony, Brad and David/Colin finishing twenty-second. The Women’s Open team of Toni, Emily and Clare were 6th. Full results are here.
1 March 2006:
Result and scores from the event at Normans Law are now on the results page
6 February 2006: The second place jinx was back in full swing at SoSOL 5 at Duns Castle yesterday with an almost clean sweep by James Ackland on white, Donald & Angus McIntyre on the yellow, Heather Hartman on light green, Jane Ackland on green, Kenneth Daly on blue and David Godfree on brown. Perhaps we should sign up the independent runner who was second on orange?
16 January 2006: Is the Interlopers’ second place jinx over? At yesterday’s ESOC sprint O at Hopetoun House there were victories on the long course for David Godfree and the short course for Jane Ackland. Interloper domination continued with Ben Hartman second on the long with Ross Mclennan of tINTo in third. There was a good turnout of Interlopers at the event which had a distinctly Interlopers’ organisational feel to it!
9 January 2006: A rather belated “Happy New Year”. Good luck on achieving your orienteering goals in 2006.
The results from the score event at Inverlugas on 2 January are now on the results page.
21 December: Congratulations to Colin Inverarity on becoming club champion. Results on the results page.
26th October: The autumn season has started with the first SoSOL and ESOA champs. Congratulations to Ben Hartman (M35), Andy Spenceley (M45) and Ray Heyworth (M70) on becoming ESOA champions.
Gillian and I aren’t doing much orienteering at the moment so if you want to write a short piece to appear hear please send it to dave.godfree “at” blueyonder.co.uk
Dave
6th September: Good luck to Janine Hensman and Toni O’Donovan who are taking part in the mountain bike orienteering world champs. Results are appearing here.
14th July: JWOC: In the classic race today Scott was 12th out of 158, giving an excellent series of results. Results etc are here.
13th July: World Champion! The Junior World Champs commenced with a sprint race won by Scott Fraser. Unfortunately the race was unofficial but who cares?
Scott’s top form continued today with an excellent 10th place in the middle distance final.
Well done and good luck for the classic race.
Dave
30th June: Last night’s Street-O was held at the Galloway’s in Buckstone. It was great to see lots of youngsters keen to compete. Results will be put up as soon as I get them, and work out how to out them on here! Well done to Ann Haley, though, beating me by 2 minutes. Thanks very much to Robin and Lucy for the courses, organisation and hospitality.
A bunch of Interlopers jetted off to Eastern Europe today, Latvia and Lithuania to be precise, on a Gross-tour to compete in the Riga and Takas competitions. Hopefully Dave, Ken, Paul and Neil will have a great two weeks – good orienteering, sunshine and not too much Cili Pizza.
Congratulations to Claire Ward on being selected as Reserve for the World Championships in Japan in August. Ray and her are moving to Sweden for the next year, and we wish them all the best.
Gillian
20th June: The Interloper team came 2nd in the Seven Hills of Edinburgh race yesterday. In muggy conditions, Graeme Ackland came 2nd again, followed by Dave Simmons in 7th and Dave Godfree 11th. Gillian wasn’t too far behind in 13th place. Spotted en route were Darina at Corstorphine and Chairman Paul at the top of Arthur’s Seat – thanks for the support! I managed to beat last year’s time, but failed to break the 2 hour mark by 27 seconds!
17th June: A very useful AGM was held last night. Gillian stepped down as Chairman, and Paul Caban was elected as her replacement. The rest of the Committee shows little change, although Stephen Haley has replaced Scott Fraser as Junior Rep. The position of Social Secretary is currently vacant, so if you’d like to do this, please contact Paul.
There was a lot of positive and stimulating discussion about the current position of the Club, marketing strategies and how to keep hold and enthuse new-comers.
Best wishes to the new committee for the next year!
Gillian
16th June: The rain managed to clear up before the 3rd Street O race, which was held last night in Braidburn Park and Swan Spring. On the Junior course, new recruit Ian Cackette sprinted to victory in a very impressive time of 22 minutes 42 seconds. In the senior race, Oleg Chepelin held off challenges from 2nd placed Graeme Ackland and 3rd placed Paul Caban. Thanks very much to Pat Squire for the use of his driveway and garage! Results are on the results page.
8th
June: Scottish Schools Championships (3/6/05)
This year the competition was held in Pollok Country Park in excellent conditions. 300 children took part. Mark Haley flew around his course for Primary 5/6 boys, and despite a 2 minute error he still managed to complete 1.9km in 12.10mins. Fortunately this was sufficient to retain the title that he had won the previous year. Meanwhile Stephen Haley had worked hard throughout the year to encourage various friends from Firrhill High School to take up orienteering so that they could compete as a team. All of them were extremely keen to do well. Stephen had possibly his best ever run completing the 2.3 km course in 18.22mins, which gave him the overall S2 boys title. The rest of the team were close behind, taking 2nd and 3rd places and so they were justly rewarded in receiving the S2 Team trophy (a rather large orange Dalarna horse, originally donated by the Swedish Orienteering Federation back in 1962!). Perhaps there are some other InterlØpers who remember this trophy from their past!
Ann Haley
2nd June: It didn’t rain but it poured again for the second street O event. Congratulations to Robin Galloway for winning.
29th May: The next Street-O is on
Wednesday from our house at 104 Tryst Park. A brand new area for orienteering!
Starts from 6:30 to 7:15. Any offers of help with start / finish etc very
welcome. Hope to see lots of you there!
29th May: Well done to Chris Godfree for an excellently planned Scottish Relays today at Tenstmuir. No controls in pits or grotty green forest, hooray!
Well done also to young Scott Fraser who has been running for Great Britain at the Nordic Championships in Norway. Not satisfied with excellent 11th and 12th places in the long and middle distance junior races he came back 6th on the first leg of the men relays mixing it with, and beating some of the big boys. Results are here
Well done to Rob Lee for becoming Scottish Champion on M40L and Colin Inverarity on M50S. I even managed to get the first finisher from a Scottish club trophy on M21E despite finish 6th. Apologies to anyone I’ve missed – let me know and I’ll correct it. Dave @ thirtyblackwood.freeserve.co.uk
Dave
20th May: A slightly soggy start to the Street-O series and the CATI at Colinton Dell didn’t manage to damp down the numbers. A great turn-out with lots of Girl Guides made the event very worthwhile. A massive thank you to Paul and all the other people helping in the pouring rain – it was really appreciated!
Results are on the Results page.
Gillian
18th May: Evening events start tonight. Any help would be appreciated. Details on fixtures page.
8th May: Gorgeous sunshine accompanied an excellent event at Kinneil today. There was a really good turn-out of competitors, with a large proportion being families, a very promising sign for the future of the sport, and meaning that the actual number of people taking part must have been way over the nominal 120. Thanks to Ben and Heather, the planners and organisers, and to Dave, Rob, Paul and Brad (and anyone I didn’t notice) for helping out all day.
An impromptu barbecue at Brad’s afterwards was a very welcome end to a successful day.
Gillian
2nd May: Interlopers are proud to announce their Street O series for the summer, starting on 18th May at Dovecot Grove. Starts from 6:30 – 7:15pm, cost £1. More details and a flyer are on the Fixtures page.
29th April: The World Cup gets under way today down South. Good luck to Claire and Dan! There are races on all weekend; see Nopesport for more details.
28th April: There’s a new newsletter on the newsletter page.
Congratulations to Murray Strain on being asked to run for Great Britain in the World Cup sprint race following Jamie Stevenson’s withdrawal. Unfortunately Murray is unable to run due to university exams.
Dave
20th April: Congratulations to, er… , me, on coming 2nd in at the British Championships in Cornwall this weekend. Many of the top Elite people had decided to give the weekend a miss, given their hectic schedule of races on other weekends, so the field was really quite small.
The other top spot of the weekend was the Women’s Short relay team of Lorna Eades, Paula Caban and Gillian Godfree, who were first finishers. Unfortunately Paula’s refusal to run round in a skirt meant that we were non-comp. The Men’s teams didn’t fare quite as well, although to be honest, I don’t really know, since I spent as much as possible of the morning in the caravan sheltering from the howling storm and watching the London Marathon. Our club tent was feeling far too delicate to venture out of its bag, and finding other Interlopers was quite difficult.
Although there doesn’t seem to be much orienteering in the near future, there’s an Interloper event at Kinneil on 8th May, which isn’t too far away, and then the Street-O events start on Wednesday evenings, along with local events on Saturdays. The next big event is the Scottish Championships at Tentsmuir at the end of May.
Gillian
11th April: Congratulations to Claire Ward and Daniel Marston on being selected to represent Great Britain at the World Cup series in May in the South of England. Good luck, run well and enjoy it!
There was a massive turn-out of Interlopers at SOL 2 on Sunday. Top positions for both Hartmans, and for Max Bloor on the White course – well done! Also doing well were Ray Heyworth with 2nd on M75L, Graeme Ross with 3rd in M21S, Graeme Ackland 2nd on M21L, Brad Connor 3rd on M35L (good to see Brad back home!), and for the girls, new Swedish recruit Lena Kask 2nd on W21S, and Fiona Weir in 3rd place on W35S, a.k.a. the Mums-to-be course.
Good luck to those heading all the way South to the British Championships in Cornwall this weekend. Hopefully it will be as warm there as the last 2 times I’ve been to Penhale, and should be a good holiday weekend. Apparently the shop on the caravan site (where the event is based) has been warned to stock up on bananas and quality newspapers!
Gillian
29th March: Although we don’t have any East of Scotland League winners this year, we do have 2 2nd places – Max Ledlie on Yellow and Graeme Ackland on Brown. Also high up are Hannah and Cherrie Ledlie in 4th position on Yellow. Congratulations!
Gillian
29th March: Hopefully people got home safely after the JK. A large number of Interlopers were there, congregating in our nice new green funnel tent. It appeared that a lot of other clubs have copied our example, given the vast number of green funnel tents to be seen! Best result was courtesy of Scott Fraser, winning M20E by a significant margin over Oleg Chepelin. Scott went on to win the JK Relays with EUOC, in a team featuring both himself and Murray Strain. Well done EUOC! The other main Interloper success that I am aware of was the battle on W35S between Heather Hartman and Lorna Eades, with Heather taking the overall title after a fantastic run on Day 2.
If I’ve missed any top results, please tell me!
Gillian
20th March: Interesting results from both ends of the SOSOL results at the Eildon Hills today. It’s fantastic to see Interlopers winning the White and Yellow courses – something that hasn’t happened since the Haley days. Well done to Max Ledlie winning Yellow and to Tina Lardner winning White!! Just as good to see is that the White course also featured Demi Lardner in 2nd Place – well done! – as well as the McIntyre family, and that the Yellow course also had Hanna and Cherry Ledlie, and Alex and Freddie Carcas competing well.
At the other end of the scale, there was total dominance on the Brown course, with Murray Strain winning from Dave Godfree, closely followed by Graeme Ackland and Ben Hartman in 4th and 5th place respectively. Half of the finishers on the Brown course were from Interlopers! The Blue course also saw a close race, this time between Ray and Claire Ward, with Ray just pipping Claire to the line in 2nd and 3rd place. A few more technical controls and Claire might have caught him, but Ray is getting better and better all the time…
Hope everyone enjoyed (?) the steep climbs and descents, and had a good day out.
Gillian
19th March: Well done to Scott Fraser on coming 3rd at the Spring Cup today. Results.
Dave
12th March: Congratulations to Claire again! This time she’s won the first UK Cup race of the season, a short race down South somewhere. She beat Emma Dahlstedt of Sweden and Oxford University by 8 secs, with the two of them well clear of the rest of the field. Also running well was Toni O’Donovan, who came 6th. Best showing in the Men’s race was Andy Kitchin in 8th, running for his new club of Walton Chasers, with Anthony Squire finishing further down. Graeme Ackland was also at the race, but seems to have had a problem at one of the controls… Good luck to all Interlopers in tomorrow’s mass start race at Hambledon.
Closer to home, Interlopers put on a CATI event at Corstorphine today. There were loads of people at it, which is great to see. Thanks to John and Tim for planning / organising and to everyone else who helped out on the day, especially Harry Lawson of ESOC for getting press-ganged into running the finish for us! Results should appear soon (on the results page).
Gillian
6th March: Congratulations to this weekend’s double winners, Claire Ward and Scott Fraser. Both of them won the JOK Chasing Sprint yesterday, and then secured their double victory at the Trossachs today, in the first Scottish Orienteering League race of the year. Scott won his course by 3 minutes to fellow student Oleg Chepelin, and Claire won W21L by a staggering 13 minutes! Our other winner is Lorna Eades on W35S. Other Interlopers doing well today were Heather Hartman, Dave Godfree, Mark Haley and Ann Haley.
Spring seemed to have arrived at last, with my helly proving far too warm for the first time this year. The start was well positioned in a sheltered sun-trap – quite different to the more customary freezing winds or midge-infested Scottish starts. The courses (M21L at least) were interesting, with the expected heather slogs, but also a few trickier legs through the plantation and some challenging route choice.
Gillian
2nd March: The powers that be have agreed that we do qualify for the final.
Dave
1st March: Actually we might not be through to the final after all. The rules haven’t been written very well as the rule about another club getting to go doesn’t take account that 2 clubs get to go from Scotland anyway. If the spirit of the rules apply then we are through (FVO were in the top 3 last year so the next club also gets to go), if the wording of the rules applies then we don’t (FVO didn’t win so there isn’t an extra place). BOF have got their thinking caps on.
Dave
28th Feb: Interlopers are through to the Final, along with ESOC and FVO. Fantastic! Thanks to all those who turned out and ran their best. Even if you don’t officially count, your run actually stops other clubs getting points, and provides reserves for injuries and mis-punches. The Final is to be held on 16th October at Clowbridge, a bit North of Manchester. It’s an open area. Please strongly consider going! We’ll make it as club-friendly as we can – plans are yet to be discussed, but so far there are suggestions of a club bus, a club meal and club accommodation.
There’s even a rumour that the Club may subsidise this in some way. More details coming soon…
Gillian
27th Feb, later: At the moment, we’ve now beaten TAY, due to some eagle-eyed work from Detective Inspector Godfree. One of Clyde’s runners was typed in with the wrong club, meaning that TAY lose points. So, assuming that there aren’t any more mistakes, all we need to determine now is how many clubs go through…
27th Feb: Ooh, it’s close! We’re joint 3rd with TAY in the Compass Sport Cup. Will we be going to the Final? Well, that depends on 3 things. Firstly, we need to check how many clubs go through to the Final – informed thinking says 2 + FVO (if they’re in the top 2, which they are); secondly, there’ll have to be a re-count and general checking of the results; and then thirdly, it’ll somehow need to be decided which of Interlopers and TAY go through. If that decision is based on the number of people wining their course, then it’s Interlopers; if it’s number of people counting, it’s TAY: but it could be done on some other system, I don’t know! We’ll find out and let you know as soon as we can. Fingers crossed…
Anyway, it was a gorgeous day at Faskally, with sun and no snow. Interlopers won the 2 Blue courses, thanks to Gillian and Scott, both by impressive winning margins. Results can be found here http://www.rstrain.ndtilda.co.uk/results_05/cst05/. Best result of the day has to be Mark, coming 2nd on the White course despite having the wrong set of control descriptions!
Gillian
26th Feb: What are your thoughts on the BOF Membership Proposals? You can read it here http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/asp/makepage.asp?PID=MEMBPROP and you can read some discussion about it here http://www.nopesport.com/forum/ in the Discussion topic.
Please tell BOF or Ken Daly (or me!) if you have any comments to make on it.
Lorna Eades organised a race training practice session today in Dalkeith Park. There were 2 sprint races.
I hope everyone’s surviving the current winter onslaught and aren’t getting too cold training. Perhaps we should all have followed John Barrow’s example and headed to warmer climes for February. I hope it’s brilliant hot sunshine over there, John!
Gillian
12th Feb: A big Interloper turnout for the Carnethy Five Hill race today. Best result was Murray Strain, who actually won the race – well done! No mean feat with over 450 finishers. Also running were Dave Godfree, Colin Eades, Dave Simmons, Pat Bartlett, and Pierre Garnaud; Claire Ward was first Interlopette, with Janine Hensman and Evelyn Freney following closely behind.
Reminder: Closing date for the Compass Strop Cup is next Sunday, but you have to be entered by Anthony Squire. Let him know asap if you want to run. Details below (on 16th Jan).
8th Feb: Interløpers break world record! Earlier today Graeme Ackland, Scott Fraser and Murray Strain smashed the world 10,000m record of Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele by nearly 30 seconds with a time of 25:51.7. Well done lads!
The penultimate SoSOL of the season was held at Mugdock Country Park just north of Glasgow on Sunday. No win on the green course this week but Claire Ward won the blue and Dave Godfree won the brown. The final race in the series is at the Eildon Hills in the Borders on the 20th of March. Results are here.
31st Jan: Interløpers took a clean sweep of the technical courses at the SoSOL in Holyrood Park yesterday with Ben Hartman winning green, Graeme Ackland winning blue and Dave Godfree winning brown. Results are here.
29th Jan: The Men’s A team from Lothian Running Club, which was half-composed of Interlopers, came 2nd today in the Devil’s Burden Hill Relay. The race is held over the Lomonds of Fife, with 4 legs, some run in pairs. Starring for Interlopers were Dave Godfree, Graeme Ackland and Andy Kitchin, who were joined by Dan Halliday of EUOC and 2 other runners. Also running in the relay were Dave Simmons, Colin Eades, Rob Lee, Kate Kitchin, Lucy Galloway, Helen Murray, Gillian Godfree and Fiona Weir – in fact, 5 out of 6 of the girls’ team were Interlopers.
Big thanks must go to Lorna Eades for giving up her day to act as chauffeuse and baby-sitter, and also all the others who helped with transporting people around between the changeover points.
Hopefully everyone enjoyed their day out, and the gorgeous sunshine and unseasonably high temperatures certainly helped to make it a very pleasant race.
Gillian
24th Jan: The Burn’s supper was held at the weekend, with a good turnout. Much haggis was enjoyed.
Any more takers for the Compass Strop Cup?? E-mail Anthony with your details.

14th Jan: A belated thank you to Fiona and Barry for providing very welcome soup and mince pies after the Club Champs. I managed to miss everybody else, so wasn’t sure if anyone else had gone, but a rumour has reached me that it was very well attended and was a great success. Thanks again to Barry and Fiona – sorry it’s a bit late.

3 January: Happy New Year. Results of the Festive Frolic at Inshriach are on the results page.
