OLD NEWS

22nd December: Thanks a million (ho ho ho) to Pat for organising the Club Champs, and to Rob and Patricia for hosting the Christmas party. Much fun was had at both events. There are new photos on the Photos page.

A new award will be shortly be made to a Club member, the “Volunteer Thank You” present. Names of all organisers/planners/controllers/etc from last year’s events were put in a hat, and the winner is… Graeme Ackland! Thank you to all the people who have helped out at events this year – your time and effort is much appreciated!

20th December

INTERLOPERS CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004 Kineil Woods 19th Decmber

If you are a little short of a bob or two after Christmas there are plenty of club members who you could approach for a 'sub'. Twenty people attained 'millionaire' status by correctly answering all 15 questions on their course at the INT club championships (either they are very knowledgeable or they ran around all of the controls until they found the correct answer!)

Ben Hartman was the "winner" as he took 39 mins 40 secs to find all his answers on course B, just ahead of Fiona on the A course and Gillian on the B. Obviously all those late nights reading the books has paid off, Ben!

Twenty five starts (& 25 finishes) were recorded and with Santa's lucky dip on hand there was plenty of entertainment and activity to ward off the sub zero temperatures.

16th December: New club newsletter – see the newsletter page.

26th November: A belated big thank you to Mary Ross for organising, Paul Caban for planning, and Graeme Ackland and Colin Eades for co-controlling the event at Dechmont Law last weekend. Despite the weather and the hold-up on the M8, we had a great turn-out again. Paul’s courses were very interesting, with some thought-provoking route-choices and the Brown course managed 10k with virtually no repetition. Thanks as usual to all the Interloper volunteers, especially those who braved the weather at the start and finish. I felt rather guilty sitting in the nice warm sports hall! The finish team especially did a great job waiting on and on for the last finishers.

22nd November:

British Orienteering Squad Fund Raising

Murray Strain, Graeme Ackland and Scott Fraser (all Interløpers members) will attempt to beat the World 10,000m Record of 26:20 set by Kenenisa Bekele.

There are 50x 200m to be completed and we will do it in relay style.  (E.g. Scott runs 200m passes to Murray (he runs 200m) then he passes to Graeme (he runs 200m).  This should give us approx 1minute recovery.

To beat the record we have to average under 31.5secs per 200m. (Approx 17 repetitions each)

It will take place around the start of February in Meadowbank stadium, Edinburgh.

If you would like to help support the squad funds then why not sponsor us any amount of money you want.  See if you can estimate what time we will do it in.

*Special prize for the entry that is closest*

Please make cheques payable to ‘British Orienteering Squad Support Fund’

Thank you for your support

You can pass on an entry if you see any of us (or members of BOF/support fund) or send to:

17th November: Eades Family Just Got Bigger. Fiona Eades arrived at 2am on Tuesday morning.
She weighed in at 2.74kg or 6lb and 1/2 oz in the old money.
She measured (subject to much wriggling) 47cm long 18.5 inches in the old
money.
Mother and baby are doing fine, and dad is just wandering about grinning all
the time.
Mairi is excited about her new sister and has been to visit Lorna and Fiona
at the hospital.

8th November:  Results from Saturday’s event at Mortonhall are on the results page.

31st October:  As part of the EUOC 40th birthday weekend there was a street race today round the centre of Edinburgh.  Congratulations to Andy Spenceley who took full advantage of his one control handicap to sneak from the back to the front of the lead pack and take a clear victory.  Top scratch time was my Murray Strain.  Results are on the results page.

21st October: A list of East of Scotland Champions is now available here.  Congratulations to Claire, Murray, Ben, Graeme and Ray

18th October: There was a big turn out of Interløpers at the South of Scotland League / East of Scotland Champs at Gullane yesterday.  Results are here.  Congratulations to Max, Mark, Graham, Claire and Chris for being true Interløpers and finishing second.  I haven’t seen a list of East of Scotland Champions yet but I expect a fair few Interløpers won.

Dave

14th October: Congratulations to Chris Godfree on being the Man in the ManorMouse competition at the weekend.  (Fastest combined time in the Manor Water and Pentland Skyline hill races).  And to Gillian for finish 2nd lady in the Pentland Skyline.

10th October: The Junior European Cup website is here and the results are here.

9th October: News just in: European Silver for Fraser!! Interlopers proved today that the lack of juniors in the club is more than compensated for by sheer world class quality. At the Junior European Cup in the South of England this afternoon, Scott Fraser won the silver medal in the Sprint race, showing true Interloper training. He is an extremely talented runner, with blistering speed as well as endurance, and is already acknowledged as one of the top junior orienteers in Britain, and the best in his age-class. With two Junior World Championships under his belt, Scott is now establishing himself firmly on the International scene – and with two years as a junior still in front of him, who knows what is yet to come?

A very proud Gillian!

7th October: If you’re looking at the website via the new address: www.interlopers.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk you can have a look at the latest newsletter, hot off the wire.  Click on the links in the left hand column.  If you can’t see the links you’re probably looking at the page via the old address which is no longer being updated.

Dave (still not fat!)  Still eating cake though… - Gillian

4th October: A few intrepid Interløpers made the trip north to the final Scottish O League race at Balmedie.  There were victories for Max Bloor on the white course and Chris Smith on the orange course – well done to you both.  In the badge classes it reverted to true Interløpers form with second places for Darina on W21S, Ken on M40L and Barry on M55L.  Results are here

Meanwhile down south in the Lake District the Lothian Running Club team in the Ian Hodgson relay consisted entirely of Interløpers and finished a very creditable 16th out of about 65 teams.  Results are here

Dave

29th September:  You might have spotted that this page is hosted on a new server.  Due to our recent house move it is more difficult to update the freeserve/wanadoo webpages.  The website is now at www.interlopers.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk, the old site will remain indefinitely (as far as I am aware) but only the news page will be updated.

Dave

23nd September: It’s official.  Edinburgh has a new first-class orienteering area.  Ackland Surveys have now mapped King’s Buildings, and the inaugural event was held last night, courtesy of Pat & Sue.  Fastest was Chris Godfree, winning by over 2 minutes from Jason Inman.  The course was one of the trickiest sprint races I have ever done.  Admittedly the rapidly fading light didn’t help matters, but the area is intricate and complicated, with highly challenging route choices on all levels.  Really enjoyable – thanks Graeme.

Results are on the results page.

Gillian

20th September: The 2004/5 South of Scotland league got underway yesterday at West Lomond Hill in Fife.  Top 3 Interløpers results were: John Barrow, 2nd on red and Tim Barrow, 1st on green.

9th September: Results of Swan Spring street O are on the results page.

7th September: Results for the 11 person relay are here.

Fixtures list has been updated as I got the dates of some of the hill races wrong.

5th September: Yes, we’ve done it again. 2nd place for Interlopers. This time it was at the 11-person relay, held this morning at Bowhill near Selkirk. A good turn-out from the club saw 2 Interlopers teams compete, although the 2nd team did have a little help from its friends in the 1st team! Thanks go to Claire for getting round 3 courses (including 2 greens!). Ben nearly managed to get back from his first run before it was time to go out on his 2nd – Pat only had to wait a couple of minutes!

FVO won the event, managing to avoid their mis-punching panic of last year. Instead it was Clyde who mis-punched, Ben Rattray not realising that there were 3 spectator controls while trying to catch up Chris. Thanks to RR for organising – a great location with lots of spectator interest.

Gillian

2nd September: Results of Buckstone Urban Orienteering are here.

27th August: The first in our new set of Urban Orienteering events takes place next Wednesday, 1st September. Caban has now discovered (yesterday!) that he is hosting it, and is busy planning some excellent courses around Buckstone. Starts from 6:30 – 7:30, cost £1, at 50 Buckstone Road.

22nd August: A few Interlopers competed in the Lomonds of Fife Hill Race today (venue of the first SOSOL on 19th September). Andy came 2nd, with Colin somewhere behind (I’ve not seen official results yet!). Colin was pleased to report that he beat speedy Marbeth Sheill to the top of both West and East Lomond! Dave woosed out due to a dodgy Achilles, especially sensible since the course is half road-race these days. Apparently the path to the (almost) top of W Lomond has been improved to allow for wheelchair access! Gillian was first woman. It was a gorgeous sunny day with a light breeze to keep you cool – perfect running conditions! Photos on the photos page.

11-Person relay – 5th September, Bowhill (near Selkirk) – Anyone else want to run? Names to Gillian by this Wednesday please. Everyone very welcome.

Gillian

15th August: Congratulations to Chris and Ruth Godfree! Photos on the photos page.

Child Protection: I recently sent out a letter and forms to all members of Interlopers with children under 18 years old. I am still waiting for the majority of these to be returned. Please do so – I know it seems really stupid, but we have to do our best to stick within the guidelines. Thanks for those I’ve got already.

Gillian

14th August: Chris and Ruth are getting married today.  The festivities started last night with a barbecue.  Making a surprise appearance was Brad Connor, quashing rumours that he’d turned into a leprechaun.  Photos on the photos page.

PS – There’s also an hononary Interloper Controller to be found in the photos – can you spot him??? Oh, and all the blurred photos – that’ll be my fault… Far too technologically advanced for me…

Gillian

13th August: It’s a Boy!  Benjamin Patrick Squire was born early this morning at 2.11am - weighing 8st 8lbs.

Mother and Baby are doing well - Dad's a bit tired and is about to go to bed.

Thank you all for your emails and texts of encouragement - they meant a lot to us.

Cheers

Anthony, Vicky & Ben

It has been pointed out by Chris that “Ben might take after his Dad but I hope he doesn't weigh that much just yet!!”

Dave

10th August: Interloper types were thin on the ground at this year’s Phoenix Long-O, with more of the club racing in Sweden than in the Cheviots this weekend. Despite the lack of numbers, however, we must have got our fair share of the prizes, with Daddy Ackland coming 2nd on the A course, followed by Daddy Eades in 9th place. On the C course, Janine was first lady and 3rd overall, and Brad was the perfect gentleman, finishing in 8th place.

After the World Championship selection races in Sweden, Dan Marston has been selected to represent Great Britain at WOC this September. He’ll be running the Long, Middle and Relay races. Congratulations and good luck, Daniel!

PS: Gillian has also been selected as the reserve but was too shy to mention it! Dave

2nd August: Congratulations to Mr and Mrs Cunnane on their recent wedding! Unfortunately your web-masters were unable to attend the party, so would welcome any pictures or info about it…

15th July: Results of Grange Urban orienteering are on the results page and some photos are on the photo page.

12th July: Well done to Rob Lee on finishing 8th in M40 and Ben Hartman 20th in M35 at the World Master Champs.  Full results are here.

Good luck to Clare Ward at the European Champs this week.  She’s made a good start by being one of the few people to qualify for the final in both the middle and classic distances.  Keep up to date with results here.

Dave

8th July: A small turn-out at the first of our Urban Orienteering events last night. Despite that, the cake was virtually almost all eaten! Highlights included James running the start very efficiently; the mass start people on Long following Ann (on Short) for quite a way before doing a U-turn; the local kids playing football and beating each other up all round and over the tent!

Only one control got misplaced, although another migrated from normal hand height to the top of a tree – that wasn’t where I had put it, Jane!

Thanks to all the Interløpers who turned out and helped brilliantly – shame we didn’t have any more beginners. However, we did manage to attract one new family, so welcome to Steve Reid, Debbie Kelso and children.

Results on the results page, photos on the photos page!

Gillian

7th July:  Top international results.  Scott Fraser came 24th in the JWOC middle distance final today having sneaked into the final (top 60) by 3 seconds.  At yesterdays’ WMOC qualification Rob won his heat and Ben was 7th.  See nopesport for reports and links under 3rd July for results.

Dave

3rd July:  Good luck to Ben Hartman and Rob Lee at the World Masters champs in Italy.  Qualification races are on Tuesday and Wednesday with the finals on Friday.  You can (hopefully) follow their progress here.

Good luck to Scott “Scotia” Fraser at the Junior World Champs in Poland.  The latest weather forecast for Gdansk is much the same as Edinburgh (thunderstorms) and a mere 20 degrees cooler than it was there at JWOC 1994.  The competition opens with the middle distance qualification on Tuesday.  Full details are here.

Dave

1st July, later on: The 2nd end of an era. Tim Lenton leaves Edinburgh tomorrow, to take up his new job as Reader at the University of East Anglia. We wish Tim all the best in his new job, and hope he doesn’t miss the hills too much! Come back and visit, Tim!

1st July: The end of an era.  Colin Inverarity has produced his final newsletter.  For those who can’t wait for the printed version to arrive it can found in the links on the left hand side.  Be warned though that it is a 7MB file so may take a wee while to download.  Definitely worth it though.  Many thanks to Colin for his efforts over the years.

Dave

27th June: The only Interlopers orienteering (that I know of!) this weekend were Ben and Heather at the Norwegian O-Festival. Ben had excellent results with a 4th and 5th place on M35L; Heather finished 12th and 13th on W21L.

Today saw the 25th running of the 7-Hills of Edinburgh race. Graeme Ackland was hoping for an 8th win, but this year, it wasn’t to be, and he had to settle for 2nd place instead. Tim Lenton managed 5th place after virtually no sleep – too much partying last night?? Dave Godfree suffered badly from cramp in his calves after Blackford Hill, losing 5 minutes in the last half-hour of the race. Luckily, he managed to stay ahead of Gillian, who was first lady. Rob Bloor also got round the course. Team Lothian (Dave, Tim and Graeme) were 2nd club for the 2nd time this weekend, this time losing fairly to Carnethy.

Gillian

26th June: Interløpers success at the Eildon 2 Hills Race in Melrose today.  The men’s race was won by Tim Lenton with Dave Godfree in 5th place.  Gillian Godfree was first lady home in 9th place and Helen Murray was 3rd lady and first lady vet.  Sadly the team prizes were for teams of 3 men or 3 women.  Tim, Dave and Gillian, running for Lothian Running Club actually beat the “winning” Gala Harriers men’s team – but seeing as the prize was a crate of Miller, Dave wasn’t too disappointed; had it been a crate of Greenmantle there might have been an argument…

Meanwhile the Junior Inter-Regional Championships were being held at Archerfield with John Barrow as on-the-day controller in Colin Eades’ absence.  A report can be found on nopesport.

21st June: A few Interløpers braved the wintry conditions in the far North of Scotland at the weekend to take part in the Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon. True to Interløper form, both teams finished in 2nd place! Well done to Anthony and Chris who came 2nd on the B course, with a great win on Day 1. Also well done to Tim and non-Interløper Jethro Lennox, coming 2nd on the Elite course, and who won Day 2! There is an excellent picture of Chris and Anthony on the LAMM website http://www.lamm.co.uk/galleries/lamm/photo.php?cat_id=5&photo_id=l2004410 where they look amazingly fresh considering they’ve just spent almost 11 hours running in horrible conditions, including a night’s rough camping! They’re also to be spotted in http://www.lamm.co.uk/galleries/lamm/photo.php?cat_id=5&photo_id=l2004301 .  I couldn’t see any photos of Tim or Jethro, or of Helen and Hilary who also competed. If there are any, please let me know!

A few not-quite-so-mad Interløpers made up the majority of the competitors at a BASOC local event on Saturday, taking top 4 places on the Green/Blue course – out of 6! Despite the rain, the midges were present in large numbers, as always at ‘Strath-marshy’.

Gillian

18th June: Results from Colinton Dell are now on the results page.

18th June: After a high-speed AGM, the brand new Interløpers’ committee is as follows: Chairman – Gillian; Secretary – John; Treasurer – Ben; Newsletter – Barry; Social Sec – Darina; Junior Rep – Scott; Club Captain – Anthony; Ordinary Members – Paul and Chris. So no change at the top, but a bit of re-shuffling and some new faces and re-appearances in the lower ranks.

Massive thanks go to Colin Inverarity for all his work over the years as Newsletter Editor. Thanks also to Helen Murray and Ken Daly for their work on the committee.

The meal afterwards at Kalpna probably had a larger attendance than the AGM! (Apparently there was some minor sporting event happening last night!)We were brought lots of different dishes to try, so waiting time was limited and you could try out loads of different things. The food was delicious, and being entirely vegetarian, slightly different to the other local Indian restaurants.

16th June: I’m just back from the highly successful CATI at Colinton Dell. There was a great turn-out, with a very high percentage of juniors. Results will appear on the results page as soon as they have been typed-in! Thanks very much to Paul for organising, and also to Richard and Ann for helping out.

Gillian

14th June: The British Elite Champs were held this weekend at Culbin and Lossie. Dave Godfree showed his remarkable sand-dune talent with a 5th and a 4th place, with a close win over Andy Kitchin (3 seconds!) in the Middle Distance race.  Other top 10 Interløper results were Al Buckley 6th in the classic race, Clare 5th in the short race, Gillian 6th in the short race and 3rd in the classic race, Toni O’Donovan 10th in the short race and 5th in the classic race.

Results, together with the SOL and colour coded event are here

There was also a Scottish O League race at Culbin on Saturday. Top 3 Interløper results are: Mark Haley 2nd JM2, Heather Hartman 1st on W21L, Darina Cunnane 2nd on W21S, Ann Haley 2nd on W40L, and Patricia Alston 3rd on W40S.

On top of all these events, it was Darina’s hen-night part 1 on Saturday night in the heady town of Nairn. Two men also attended and were made very welcome!! The atmosphere was exceedingly hot and sultry, and the food was superb. A great time was had by all. Thanks to Extraloper Hilary for organising it, and to Darina for getting married and giving us a good occasion to go out!!

Lastly, for those of you who haven’t heard, there’s a sibling for Mairi on the way. Congratulations to Lorna and Colin!

Gillian

11th June: Max and Rob Bloor – TV stars in Portugal. I’ve just found the TV documentary made at the Portugal O Meet in February. 2 Bloors were spotted at about 6 mins into the video, as was Dave Godfree a bit later on. Click here . Also featured are some bloke called Jorgen and another called Ben Rattray, although Frau Niggli-Luder was completely edited out!

Gillian

31st May: Well done to everyone at the Scottish Champs.  There are a few pictures on the photos page.

28th May: Some pictures from the Scotland v Lithuania match have been added to the photos page.  Thanks to Barry for the photos.

Good luck to everyone running at the Scottish Champs this weekend.

May 25th: Congratulations to Claire Ward and Daniel Marston on their selection to the Great Britain team for the European Championships / World Cup Set 1! Selections were based on two weekends of racing. The first was in the Forest of Dean at the start of may, and the second was this last weekend in the Lake District. It incorporated the British Sprint Championships on the Saturday and the National Event at Holme Fell on the Sunday.

Top Interloper results at the British Sprint Championships included Scott Fraser 2nd on M20E, Daniel Marston 2nd and Murray Strain 4th on M21E, Rob Lee 2nd and Graeme Ackland 3rd on M40+, and Claire Ward 3rd on W21E. The Sprint Championships are indeed worth trying to win, if only because the prizes are Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding! The courses were great fun, with a mixture of semi-open and wooded terrain, and an exciting rocky downhill run-in. Unfortunately my intelligence kicked in to make me take the run-in carefully, costing me 2 places!

The event at Holme Fell was on a scorcher of a day. Sensible people were seen heading off to the start loaded with platipli and camel-backs to keep them vaguely hydrated round the course. The courses were interesting, with a mix of short technical legs and long route-choice legs over the open fell. Following tradition there were several 2nd places for Interlopers, with Heather Hartman 3rd on W21L, Daniel Marston 2nd again on M21E, Ben Hartman 2nd on M35L, Lorna Eades 3rd on W35L, and Rob Lee 3rd on M40L.

At least by the time I finished, the queues at Wilf’s were blessedly short, just ready for my 3 visits. Firstly it was my first point of call after download as I staggered there for Emergency Recovery Rations of Lucozade and cake. I managed to get changed and went back for a baked potato and more Lucozade. I then caught Dave as he fell out of Download, donated my 2nd bottle of Lucozade to him and returned to Wilf’s for a 2nd baked potato. For Dave, not me, I hasten to add. The moral of the story? If it’s a hot sunny day, take twice as much water with you as you think you’ll need – and then a bit more!

All in all, it was a fantastic weekend of top-quality orienteering – just what life is for.

Gillian

PS Full report on Lithuania hasn’t yet appeared due to me having to do some work occasionally. Would anyone like to write one? Alternatively look at nopesport.

PPS I also tried to put some pictures on here, but unsurprisingly my technical skills aren’t up to that. Anyone got any photos we could put on, please please??

17th May: Congratulations to Ben Hartman on winning M35 at the Vilnius 3-Day event in Lithuania! Fuller report and photos to follow…  Results can be found here

Day 2 included the Scotland v Lithuania match, Interløpers in the team were Scott Fraser, Dave Godfree, Dan Marston, Neil Marston, Murray Strain, Ben Hartman, Barry Owen, Gillian Godfree and Heather Hartman.

17th May: The AGM will take place on Thursday 17th June at 7pm at the Pleasance. There will be a meal afterwards – let Helen Murray know if you want to go to the meal.

Interlopers has lots of events coming up that we need people to volunteer for.

1. Deeside 2005 - yes, help, it's another 6-Day. This time we only need to do Day 1, but we (and a couple of other clubs) need to find 2 planners, 2 organisers and an Assistant Controller. The area is Cambus O'May.

2. Next year's SOL is on 2nd October 2005. We need to find an Organiser for this. It's (probably) on Drummond Hill.

3. SOSOL 2004 is (probably) on 21st November 2004 at Archerfield. We need a planner and an organiser.

4. The O calendar often looks very empty of events near Edinburgh at weekends. Could anyone offer to organise / plan a local, small colour-coded event in the next year? You can choose the area and date, and you only need to do 5 courses - White to Green.

If you'd rather volunteer for something nice and warm indoors, the ESOA are looking for a Secretary, and the SOA are looking for a Vice-President (Performance)!

Gillian

5th May: Good luck to all the Interlopers heading off tomorrow to Lithuania for the Scotland versus Lithuania match on Saturday. I haven’t seen a finalised list of those going, but I think it includes Scott Fraser, Ben Hartman, Heather Hartman, Dave Godfree, Neil Marston, Daniel Marston and me, and is of course master-minded by El Supremo himself, Gordon Ross, in his finale as Scottish Vice-President (Performance) and SEDS manager.

Gillian

4th May:  The bank holiday weekend saw the 0007 events in the Forest of Dean, consisting of a short race, National Event and British Relay champs and incorporating the Future Champions Cup Final, Junior World Champs selection races and UK Cup races.

Congratulations to Scott Fraser on winning M18 both days and on being selected for the Junior World Champs again.

Congratulations to the Men’s Short relay team of Anthony, Chris and Colin on winning.  The Women’s open team was 4th.  Unfortunately the Men’s open team didn’t finish as Andy returned to the finish field covered in blood after badly spiking his face on a tree – he’s now been sewn back together – get well soon Andy.

Results of the various races can be found here.

25th April: The meercat that had tunnelled through into the Children’s Play Area had hordes of visitors today as SOL3 visited the Auchengarrich Wildlife Centre at Mill of Fortune. We had 390 competitors, a very high number for a SOL, who basked happily in the sunshine after their courses. The string course was very popular, with several competitors having lots of runs round it, trying to beat their previous best time.

Thank you very much to Ben and Heather Hartman for planning, to Pat Squire for ably organising and to Mike Atherton for controlling – not that we had many problems for him to sort out!  Thank you also very much for all the Interlopers who helped out; the event can’t run without your man-power!

Prizes were donated by Auchengarrich Wildlife Centre and by Scottish O Tours, for which we are very grateful. Anyone who has still to collect their prize, please contact Gillian Godfree (0131 667 9747 before 9pm).

Most impressive Interloper result comes from Mark Haley, winning the JM2 class and Course 2 outright. I must admit, however, that he appeared to have been digesting steroids or something similar, since he measured nearly 6’ when he turned up to collect his prize!

Gillian

16th April:  If anyone wants any ankle tape I’ve got another batch from Finland.  Cost is £3 per roll.  Orders to dave@thirtyblackwood.freeserve.co.uk

13th April:  The Lake District saw some sunshine at the weekend for the JK rather than the usual rain.  Although billed as being held in Graythwaite the event included parts of Grizedale, High Dam and Bishops Wood.  There was a large turnout of Interløpers with 1st places for Scott Fraser on M18L, Heather Hartman on W21L and Stephen Haley on M14B – well done to all 3.  True Interløpers in 2nd place were Mark Haley on M10B, Graham Haley on the Orange and the Women’s relay team.  Other top results were: Ben 4th and Colin 9th on M35L, Rob 8th on M40L, Mary Ross 6th on W21S, Jane 8th on W40L, Andy 11th on M21E and Claire 7th on W21E.  The men’s relay teams were 7th, 13th and 25th in one of the most competitive British relays for a long time.  As is usual with Interløpers the third team came back ahead of the first team on leg 1.  The men’s 120+ team came 53rd – by my calculation they must have been one of the older teams in the race.

Individual results are here and relay results are here.

If anyone has any photos I can put them on the website if you send them to dave“at sign”thirtyblackwood.freeserve.co.uk

4th April, later: Oops, forgot to mention… a massive thank you to all the Interløpers who turned up at the Trossachs in the deluge to help out. I noticed Pat Squire, Rob Bloor, Rob Lee and Kirsty Ross all doing their bit. Thanks also to anyone I was too exhausted to notice!

Gillian

4th April: Stop Press - Scotland win Senior Home Internationals!!

Wet. Torrential. Mud-bath. These are the words that spring to mind in describing the Trossachs yesterday. Despite the weather, the Senior Home teams raced up and down steep hills, deep heather and vertical cliffs, in an epic SHI race. Gordon Ross had planned some challenging and tough courses  - although it would be hard to plan a course on the Trossachs that wasn’t challenging and tough!

Interlopers and Scotland excelled themselves by taking the majority of top placings in the M20, M21 and W21 classes (ignoring the Lithuanian team), and taking the Individual title by miles over England! Scott Fraser won the M20 course, despite being exhausted after training with the British Squad in Sweden all last week; Andy Kitchin won M21, with Dave Godfree 4th; and W21 saw a complete Interlopers’ annihilation of the rest of the field, with Gillian Godfree 1st, Toni O’Donovan (Ireland) 2nd, Janine Hensman 3rd and Claire Ward 4th, the last two having also rushed home from the Sweden training camp. Also representing Scotland were Heather Hartman and Murray Strain. After finishing looking like a mud-man, Dave was seen heading towards the lake to swim in some clean water. “Well, I can’t get any wetter than I already am!” he said.

Barr Wood presented a totally different challenge, with Scotland needing to hold off England’s come-back attempt. Unfortunately for the girls, Mhairi McKenzie had been injured the previous day and had to drop out of the relay teams. There was no need to worry, however, as Scotland won the women’s relay convincingly (ignoring Lithuania again!), and with (I think…) both teams coming back before the English 1st team. The men had no injury worries, and easily took 1st place, with Andy just losing out to Mark Nixon of England for 2nd Place. The 3rd team also did really well.

So onto the prize-giving, where Gordon Ross gave a jubilant re-telling of the Battle of Bannockburn, and Flower of Scotland resounded over the hills once again!

See http://www.rstrain.ndtilda.co.uk/SOA/shi_04/ for full results.

3rd April: Congratulations to Anthony and Vicky! – The sound of pitter, patter feet…

..........will soon be heard in the Squire household.

I'm pleased to announce that Vicky & I are expecting a baby - due at the beginning of August (Good thing it's not a 6-Days year!). Mother, Father, Baby, Grandfather and Grandmother are all doing well - if somewhat nervous about the prospect of these new roles!

Rumours that the father has placed a bet on the baby becoming World Orienteering Champion can not be confirmed at the time of going to press, however it can be revealed that Baby Squire has been signed up to the Interlopers Men's or Women's Open Relay team in 2025.

Thought I'd better make sure you all knew, so that you didn't just think Vicky had put on weight when you saw us at the JK!
Cheers
Anthony

15 March: In the three Park World Tour races last week Clare Ward finished in 15th, 11th and 11th to lie 14th in the overall standings.  Full results and standings on the Park World Tour website.

Despite us not entering the CompassSport cup this year a few Interløpers made the short trip to Glentress, with Ben Hartman finishing second on the brown.  Full results are here.

Some of the elite members were on a training weekend with the British & Scottish Squads in the far north based at Carbisdale Castle which must be the grandest Youth Hostel in the country.  It’s even got an adjacent forest with a permanent O course.  A little steep in places but some of the most enjoyable forest I’ve run in for some time.

11March: There are 4 club t-shirts left at the bargain price of £8.50, sizes are M and L.  Contact Janine (Janine.hensman “at sign” lycos.co.uk) to get one before they all go.

Coming up on 27th April is club discount evening at Tisos on Rose Street from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, you’ll need some proof of club membership.

10 March:

2004 sees the 40th birthday of the first and finest university orienteering club in Great Britain. Edinburgh University orienteering club, known by its members as the legends, was set up in 1964. The club has enjoyed great success and are the current British Universities Champions. Many true legends have been members including World Championship medallists Jon Musgrave, Jon Duncan and Yvette Hague. To celebrate this occasion their will be a dinner held in the Playfair Library, Old College, Edinburgh followed by a ceildh at Teviot Row Union . The date of this will be Saturday 30th October.  There will also be orienteering events on both days of the weekend.

if you are aware of any former members who would be interested in the celebrations tell them to send an e-mail to partyboy@euoclegends.co.uk or send a letter to Ed Nicholas, Edinburgh University Sports Union, 48, The Pleasance, Edinburgh, EH8 9TJ

9 March: Claire Ward was a true Interløper finishing second in her heat at the Park World Tour qualification race in Italy this morning.  More info here.

Overall SOSOL results are here.  Well done to Stephen Haley: 1st on the orange, Ray Heyworth: 2nd on light green, Heather Hartman: 3rd on blue and Keith Dawson: 4th on blue.

The Scottish Masters (that’s Veterans to most people) Cross Country Champs were held at Cupar on Saturday.  Notable Interløper performances were Helen Murray 4th, Karen Dobbie 9th, Graeme Ackland 10th and Tim Brand 21st.

7 March: A gorgeous spring day saw droves of Interlopers heading off to Touch for SOL 1. The daffodils were just coming out on the way to the Far Start, a 20-minute jog uphill (although that did mean that most of the course was then downhill!) Steve Nicholson’s courses were very enjoyable and challenging, and the Touch estate woodland provided top-quality technical and runnable orienteering. All of this was overseen by Mr Controller himself, Graeme Ackland.

Interloper results are: Mark Haley getting off to a flying start by winning JM2 (by 4 minutes!); Stephen Haley 3rd on JM4; M21L should be re-named the Interloper course, with Andy 1st, Dave 3rd, Al 4th, Chris 5th, Ben 7th, Rob 8th and Pete 11th; M21S saw Graeme R taking 3rd; Colin 2nd in M35L; Rob B 3rd, Ken 5th and Paul 8th on M40L; Ronny Lardner 9th on M40S; Graham Mc 8th, and Keith 12th on M45L; a bit of packing going on in M55L with Pat beating Bill by 8 seconds to come 12th and 13th respectively, with Steve 14th; jbw 3rd on M60S; and Ray rounding off the men with a resounding 10 minute victory on M75L.

In the women’s courses, Gillian was 1st, Heather 5th and Janine 6th on W21L; Darina 2nd and Mary 4th on W21S; Clare 5th on W35S; Ann Super-mum Haley won W40L with a 3 minute lead; Patricia was 2nd on W40S; and Mo 12th on W45L.

Even the colour-coded saw some Interloper action, with Freya and Laura 4th and Max 7th on White, although Max did pause for autographs near the end!! The light green course was also Interlopered, with Jane 2nd and Graham 3rd.

Apologies to anyone I’ve missed. I hope to see as much Interloper action at SOL 2 at Coile Nathais – should be another fantastic event!

Gillian

1 March:  The senior elite season got off to a cold start in the East Midlands.  The British Night Champs were held on Crich Chase in Derbyshire on an occasionally moonlit night with a few short snow flurries.  Best Interløpers result was Janine in 3rd on the women’s course.  The JOK chasing sprint on Sunday was in Sherwood Forest ably planned by our very own Graeme Ackland who took us around the worst of the brambles by sending the course through the “green” forest that was far more runnable.  After finishing second in the prologue Claire Ward showed the pack a clean pair of heels to win the women’s course by almost a minute.

27 February:  Good luck to everyone racing this weekend: British Night Champs and JOK Chasing Sprint (including UK Cup races for the 21’s and an FCC race for the juniors).  It’s also the final round of the first SOSOL at Tentsmuir – incorporating the East Area Club Champs – will we be 2nd?

Some photos from Barry and Fiona’s wedding have now appeared on the photo page.

26 February: A number of Interløpers escaped from the freezing climes of Scotland and took part in the Portugal O Meet last weekend.  The 4 day competition was held in the Alentejo region about 200km east of Lisbon.  Top results were Gillian Godfree winning D21E and Ben Hartman coming 3rd on H35A.  Click here to find out what you were missing.

Meanwhile at the SOSOL at Bar Hill there was a victory on the green course for Tim Barrow with Murray Strain second on the brown course.  The event incorporated the inaugural nopesport trophy.  Janine Hensman took the ladies title with Heather Hartman 3rd.  Murray was 2nd amongst the men closely followed by Scott Fraser in 3rd.

12 February: There was yet another SOSOL at Elibank last Sunday.  I wimped out due to a stomach upset but a few Interløpers made the trip in the snow – a single victory this time for Ronny Lardner on the light green course and no second places again.  Results are here.

This coming weekend sees a break in SOSOL proceedings before the final two races – 22 Feb at Bar Hill and 29 Feb at Tentsmuir.

3 February: The latest SOSOL at Corstorphine Hill saw victories for Mark Haley (yellow), Stephen Haley (orange), Ben Hartman (green) and Chris Godfree (brown).  And no second places at all! Full results are here.

Meanwhile there were a number of Interløpers in the deep south.  Top result was Scott Fraser winning the FCC race on Sunday while recovering from a cold.  Results for the short race on Saturday are here and results for the National Event on Sunday are here.

27 January: A frenzy of South of Scotland Orienteering League races began on Sunday at Lothian Edge near Dunbar.  Mainly wind swept moorland with a few bits of grotty woodland.  Results are here.  Well done to Stephen for being the sole winning Interløper, and Ann and Dave for being traditional Interløpers in second place.

Later on Gillian did a speech in some foreign language and brutally attacked a haggis.

A few more pictures have appeared on the photos page courtesy of Barry Owen.

20 January: The Club Champs were held on Sunday:

Well done Pat Squire, the Interlopers Club Champion 2003. Recent results show that Pat is running well at the moment and thus it is no surprise to see him taking the honours, by beating his expected time by the greatest margin. Tricia Alston also ran particularly well, finishing second overall and first lady. The trophy and a prize will be awarded to these two. Unfortunately, it was not until the end of November that I discovered that half of the woods were now owned by another party. The resultant delay arranging further permission, risk assessment, etc meant that I did not advertise the event until late on. This fact, plus event and squad training clashes over the weekend appear to have affected numbers. Sorry. Thank you to those that did turn out. I hope you enjoyed yourselves. Thanks also to those that helped. Have a great 2004.

Ken.

Results are on the results page.

18 January: Ben Hartman had a storming win at the ESOC Sprint O at Hopetoun House today holding on to his Leg 1 lead by 20 seconds from a chasing Stephen “Wo Wo” Clelland.  Also featuring in the “long” course results are Ken Daly, Heather Hartman and Barry Owen, with Pat Squire finishing an excellent 5th on the “short” course.  And as for Mr Inverarity it’s anyone’s guess what he was playing at…!  Results

5 January: Happy New Year!

Results from the Interløpers Score event at Anagach on Saturday are available here

20 December: The BASOC event on 28 December has moved, it is now at Uath Lochan – see BASOC website

18 December: Hot off the press!  The Interløpers newsletter number 130 is here.  The file is a bit of a beast at 969kb but is (partly) in technicolour.

Dave and I won’t be at the Christmas Party, so have a great time and behave yourselves. Have a fantastic Christmas and New Year - hoping to see lots of you at New Year in Speyside!

Gillian

16 December: A few Interløpers made the short trip north to the TAY score event on Sunday.  Results available here.  Many more were spotted watching the European XC in Holyrood Park.

14 December: Details of events in Grantown-on-Spey and Inverness around New Year are on the fixtures page.

12 December: Please please please could those people still owing me for club t shirts pay up!!  A cheque in the post for £8.50
payable to me would be most welcome just before Xmas!

There are still a few left in stock so if anyone wants one let me know.

Thanks
Janine

8 December: At the Scottish National Cross Country Relays on Saturday Lothian Running Club finished in the traditional Interløpers position of second in the ladies race – the team included Interløpers Helen Murray and Gillian Godfree joined by interloping Christine Milne.

6 December: The British Relay Champs next year have been cancelled!  See the BOF news page for more info.

2 December: The nopesport launch party is this Thursday (4th December) at 5/1 Nicholson Street (opposite the Festival Theatre) chez Ed Nicholas.  I’ve been asked, and I quote, to “try and get all the old boys to come for a few shandies”  Start is at 9pm, so plenty of time to get some hill training in first.  Not known what time the police will be coming…

Now for something a little different, Helen Murray reports:  A hot tip for a winter break - XC skiing in Norway!  Ryanair flight from Prestwick to Oslo-Torp (which is rather like saying Edinburgh-Dumfries - a 1hr 45 min bus journey from the target destination).  A few hours spent in Oslo sorting out maps, skis, food and other essentials and then another bus 40 mins up the road to Sollihogda.  Skis on and we made our way to our un-manned hut (electricity but sadly no hot water).  Not really enough snow to perfect the technique, but we managed one full day on snow/sludge and collected enough bruises to choose the walking option the next day.

A little early in the season perhaps, but a good exploratory trip for the next time!

27 November: From our publicity officer (Ken Daly) comes a request for volunteers at the Outdoor Show in Birmingham next April.

25 November: Results for the Braid Hills cross-country are here – although you’ll need a magnifying glass to read them.

Updated score champs results are here

24 November: Score Champs: Right, we’ve got some provisional results. These are definitely very provisional, since I know of at least one person’s result which is wrong… You’d never catch Interlopers having IT problems, now would you!!!

M21 – 2nd Graeme A, 5th Rob, 7th Scott

M40 – 2nd Ken

M45 – 11th Keith, 18th Gordon

M50 – 9th Colin

M55 - 5th Bill, 13th John

M70 – 2nd Ray

W21 – 1st Gillian, 2nd Anna, 7th Heather

White – 6th James

(If you don’t want me to put your results on in future, e-mail me and I’ll try and remember!).

Braid Hills: Brad would like me to point out that he was definitely there too, but is such a quiet, reserved type of guy that I never noticed him. Paul was there as well apparently.

Anyone else got anything they could put on here? Photos? Silly stories? Event reports? Send them to Dave, my IT Support Technician.

Gillian

23 November: A great weekend of races – Braid Hills Cross-Country on Saturday, followed by Scottish Score Champs at Devilla on Sunday.

The Braids was thronged with orienteers for the Cross-Country Race. Interlopers sighted were Lorna, Claire, Kate (if they’ve renewed yet!), Anna and Gillian in the girl’s race, and Colin, Graeme, Murray, Scott, Andy, Tim Brand and Dave in the men’s. Murray came 3rd, and sometime Interloper Relay member Hannah Wootton came 2nd, missing out on 1st by 1 second!

It was a rather different scene at Devilla, with most people either not attending or busy running whenever I was around. Spotted were 3 Acklands, Gross, Scott, Ben, John, Gillian, Anna and Dave, although there might have been lots of others lurking in the woods and avoiding me! Minor technical problems at download prevented a rapid results service; known results are Gillian and Anna doing OK on W21, Dave doing a Gross (ie retiring), Gross doing a Gross (despite being hard to do in a Score event – it’s the thought that counts!), and James making a superb run-in effort on the White course, leaving his Mum way behind!

Provisional results.

20 November: Good views of the Aurora Borealis during hill intervals.

16 November: Hundreds of people turned up at Kinneil for our SOSOL event – results and comments on the results page.

14 November: Fun and games and pizza.

The evening kicked off with James’ railway game, involving moving pieces of track around to collect “luggage”.  Unfortunately it proved too difficult for Graeme, Dave and Gillian who had to adopt the traditional approach of cancelling the trains and not joining up the track…  Next game was Twister which showed off our complete inflexibility!  James was too small so became “spin master” – obviously a budding DJ – while Mairi was small enough to crawl through the tunnels formed by everyone’s legs and arms.  Everyone else managed fine, apart from Gillian getting pushed off the board by both Tim and Brad.

After unravelling ourselves from the Twister board Helen suggested the Chocolate Game (roll a 6 and you get to put on a hat and gloves before attempting to eat a chocolate bar with a knife and fork)  Graeme managed to eat half the bar with everyone else getting a taste.  Lastly Brad bought out Pictionary.  This was dominated by Darina; having art lessons is obviously an advantage!

Thanks to Helen for hosting the party – hopefully she’ll have managed to tidy up again by now.
