Final Programme Scottish Orienteering Championships 2005
Individual and Relay events
These details are available online at:
http://www.interlopers.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk
General
Information – Both days.
Event coordinator – Phil Smithard KFO
I would like to welcome you all on behalf of The East of Scottish
Orienteering Association to the delights of Tentsmuir Forest, previous and new
visitors alike. Tentsmuir was first
used for the British Individual Championships in 1978 in what was a large and
very runnable forest and I trust that those of you who were at that event from
a distance will look forward to a return.
The nature of the forest has changed since then; it remains large and is
a working forest on a continuing basis with recent felling, but away from the
area used for the competitions. However
the forest remains fast in the main and with nil effective climb on both days
apart from the odd sandune, the weekend promises fast and furious competition-
ideal for both Individual and Relay competitions.
The Organising Team hopes
that you enjoy your visit to Fife, a hope that extends to include your outings
into the forest as well!
Good luck.
Event Centre
There is no event centre – everything happens at Tentsmuir.
Entries
Please check the start lists
to ensure that you are entered on the correct course with the correct
SportIdent (SI) card number. SI cards can be hired for 50p per day.
If for any reason you want to run twice (e.g. non-competitively in the
relay, or with children on the colour coded after your run) you will need to
use two different SI cards.
There will be limited late
entry available, subject to map availability and with a £2 surcharge, on Saturday for both Individual
and Relay. Entries for colour coded
courses up to light green are available.
There is no entry on the day for the relay on Sunday.
Directions
From north, west and south, the route to the event is signposted from
the roundabout just north of Leuchars on the A919. From here, follow O-signs towards Kinshaldy turning off left (north) when directed onto
forest roads and thence to the car park.
There is no parking fee. When
leaving the event, some will require to turn round. Exit is by a parallel road to the east then running south through
the Forestry Commission Car Park at Kinshaldy.
PLEASE NOTE – Kinshaldy is a fee paying car park. If you stop for any reason you must pay the
£1 fee at the office. Please do not
abuse this request, this exit is a special arrangement. Be careful of competitors crossing the
forest roads and observe the 20mph speed limit in the forest.
Please also note that there are ongoing roadworks on the Forth Road
Bridge which might cause significant delays.
Alternative routes are worth considering.
There maybe opportunity for a drop off point near to
the turnoff for Assembly, please follow the directions of the Marshals.
Parking
Parking is on forest roads.
These are narrow in places, with shallow ditches at the sides – please
park with care. Please combine
transport wherever possible, e.g. by leaving a car in Leuchars, and allow
plenty of time on relay day. Low occupancy vehicles will be directed to the
most distant sections of the parking. Anyone planning to bring a vehicle larger
than a minibus should contact the organizers.
Assembly, Individual Finish
and Relay Changeover Area
These are located together
in the northern part of the competition area.
The assembly area is forested and therefore sheltered, and there is
ample space for club tents. Access to
the assembly area is along flat forest tracks suitable for pushchairs. The walk
from the parking area is between 0.6km and 2km. Enquiries, First aid, String course Results, Start Lists,
Traders, etc. will be at assembly on both days. EOD and colour coded
registration (until 2pm) and Relay
registration (until 6p.m.) will be available on day 1 only.
NOTE – there is no
overnight camping/stopping anywhere in the forest. The forest will be locked overnight. Club tents may be left up overnight in the assembly area, but the
organisers can take no responsibility for them.
Dogs
Are allowed in the car park and assembly, but should be kept on leads.
The Forestry Commission forbids
smoking anywhere within Tentsmuir.
Electronic Punching
The SportIdent
system will be used. Please check that
your entry has the correct SI card number.
If you do not have your own SI card, you may buy one at the event,
otherwise you will have to hire one for the weekend at a cost of 50p per
day. A charge of £22 will be made for any SI card not
returned. Under BOF rules it is the
responsibility of the competitor to ensure that your card registers when you
punch, by waiting for the confirmation beep.
If the unit is not working, you should use the pin punch to mark your map
and report the problem at the finish. The control code is on the stake – ignore
any number appearing on tapes or on the SI unit.
For the relay,
you should use the same SI card as the individual.
Terrain
Tentsmuir is a flat, grid
forest with large amounts of sand-dune detail.
Some parts of the areas
shown as open on the map contain young trees which have now grown to heights of
2m plus. The areas enclosed by fences are visibly uninviting and can be easily
avoided; where it is necessary to run through small, unfenced areas of young
trees the terrain is generally runnable although the ground is rougher than the
mature forest floor.
The longer individual courses may encounter some green areas of
young trees with low visibility and reduced runnability.
There is
recent/current work in the mid-west part of the main forest used by the longer
Individual day courses. Planning effort has been made for courses to avoid
these areas. Please take care in the
vicinity. If any of the work affects
the courses then advice will be provided prominently on the day. The contractors maybe working on Saturday
and some traffic maybe operating. It
does not use the entry and exit roads through there may be heavy forestry
vehicles on tracks crossed by courses 1 - 4 on first part of course. There will
be felling close to the course but not where competitors will be (unless they
are lost).
Some
ditches to the NE of the area have very steep side and the water is not
clear. It is not possible to see the
depth of water or the underlying mud. The uncrossable ones have been avoided
and the deep ones that do have to be crossed will only be on courses 1 - 4.
Take extreme care if you choose to cross at a point other than indicated
crossing points eg bridges.
Map
The individual map is at
1:10000. All relay maps are at
1:10000. The map was surveyed to IOF
specifications in 2001 by Deeside Orienteering and Leisure Maps, based on
photogrammetry, with minor recent amendments to account for changes in the
vegetation. The contour interval is
2.5m.
There are no legends on the
A4 or relay maps. A3 units may have course descriptions overprinted in this
area
Relay day maps will be A4 for
all, with control descriptions on the front.
Map
collection
Maps will not be collected after the race on either day, you may not
show or discuss your course with later starters before they run, this includes
studying individual day maps at assembly on relay day. Competitors violating this rule will be
disqualified.
First
Aid and Safety
St Andrews Ambulance will be
in attendance at assembly on both days.
Please check yourself for ticks after the event. If traveling alone, please ensure someone
checks you are safely back. Whistles
and cagoules may be carried at your own risk.
Some courses cross forest roads used for event access – please be
careful when doing so.
The whole
of Tentsmuir is open to the pedestrian and bike public. Care should be taken on all roads when
approaching junctions and emerging from the forest.
Refreshments
Water will be provided at
the finish
Finish
All
competitors must punch at the finish, and proceed to download, even if
retiring. Failure to do so may result in
an unnecessary search. If you have a
hired SI card, and are not competing in the relay, please return it at the finish. If competing in the relay please retain the
hired card and ensure that your club relay team manager has the number for
relay registration. Water will be
available at the finish.
Toilets
Toilets will be located
between the car park and assembly. There are no toilets at starts or on the courses.
Prizegiving
Prizes will be awarded
promptly after the relays on Sunday. Trophies should be returned prior to the
event, or to the enquiries tent on Saturday.
In addition to the standard trophies, mugs and other merchandise will be
awarded to at least the top-3 competitors in individual A and L classes at the
prizegiving on Sunday (donations welcome!).
Mugs and merchandise prizes must be collected and will not be available
after the prizegiving.
Shadowing
young juniors
Juniors being shadowed or
accompanied will be non-competitive.
Adults may not shadow juniors prior to their own competitive run.
String
Course
There will be a free string
course located close to assembly on both days
Jury
An event jury will be
convened to adjudicate any protest. Any
protest should be submitted in writing to the enquiries tent, together with a
fee of £5.
The following traders will
be attending the weekend: - CompassPoint, Ultrasport, CompassSport and Fat
Pigs. Other traders are welcome, and
should contact the event coordinator.

Relay Event – Tentsmuir
North
Organiser: Graeme Ackland (INT)
Planner: Chris Godfree (INT)
Controller: Ian Pyrah (ESOC)
All teams must be registered
by club team managers before 6pm on Saturday.
You
should already have your team number.
Please fill in a form at registration with names, running order, and SI
numbers. The SI numbers are the most
important thing – if the registered number differs from the card used you
will be disqualified. We will assume
that SI cards are being used for the same person each day. If you run with someone else’s SI card at
the relay, you must indicate this on the registration form.
We
offer classes for men’s and women’s open, juniors and a handicap system for
seniors. The handicap system is
designed to make it easy for everyone to run an appropriate distance in a
competitive team. Changes to handicap
classes will be available subject to map availability.
We offer classes for mens and womens open,
juniors and a handicap relay. The
handicap system is designed to make it easy for everyone to run an appropriate
distance in a competitive team, while encouraging head-to-head racing. All
handicap classes start together and the winners will be the first team to
finish. Add up the total handicap
points from your team members to determine which set of courses the team will
run.

Ad hoc entries
welcome on all courses |
|||
Courses A, B, C and D have lengths 6.7km, 5.4km,
4.3km and 3.7km with negligible climb.
The estimated winning time for the handicap relay is 1 h 45 m.
LG (3km), O (2.5km) and Y (1.8km) correspond to
short versions of the colour coded system.
There are no gender restrictions in junior classes (e.g. 48- could be
M20, M16 & M12). Coloured numbers
will be issued at registration and must be worn. Lap 1 – red; lap 2 – white; lap 3- blue.
Although avoiding small time loss is extremely difficult in Tentsmuir,
the relay courses are planned entirely within areas of good visibility and all
controls are with 150m of a path. Strictly, therefore, very large time loss is
unlikely and it is suitable for technical difficulty 4.
All starts and finishes are in the assembly
area. There will be no announcement of
incoming teams – it is your responsibility to look out for your teammates.
Punch at the finish after handing over to your teammates (lap 1,2) or crossing
the finish line (lap 3). Failure to
punch at the finish may result in disqualification.
Classes 8-9 will start at 10:10 (call up 10:01) Classes 1-7 will all start at 10:00 (call up
and map issue at 9:40 – please allow plenty of time).
A mini-mass start of all
remaining competitors will take place at 12:00.
The relay finishes
at the finish line an official will judge close finishes. Third lap runners should then punch as directed at
the finish SI unit.
Ad hoc teams and
pot luck entrants
Ad hoc teams
made up of members of different clubs or incorrect
age categories are welcomed in all classes, may win awards, but will not be
eligible for trophies. Combined teams from
geographically adjacent clubs or from area associations may be entered,
and where the competitors are from clubs with insufficient
members at the event to raise a full team, may be deemed competitive at the
organiser’s discretion, if an email request is made one week in
advance. Team
entries should be made by one of the club secretaries.
Individual
entries for the relay day are also accepted from people without clubmates – a
list will appear on the website to help you find each other in advance and this
will also be available at enquiries. If
you have made an individual entry, and decide not to run, then please tell
enquiries.
There will be a
pre-registration meeting point at enquiries at 5p.m. to help you assemble
yourselves into teams. Please nominate
a single person to register such pot luck teams, and bring all three e-cards to
registration. Individuals who are not
yet part of a full team must not go to registration.
Exact teams,
including names, eligibility and SI numbers must be declared at registration
before 6pm on Saturday at the individual assembly area.
Awards and
trophies:
Relay trophies are available to teams regardless of
nationality.
There are five trophies:
1. First men’s open team,
2. First women’s open team,
3. First junior team with total BOF ages below 40
4. First junior team with total BOF ages below 48
5. First Handicap team (first finishers from classes
3-7)
There will be
additional prizes for the top three teams in open, womens, handicap and junior
classes, and other winners of classes 3-7, the first individual finisher on the
A class, (courtesy of Rob Lee) and anything else we’re offered prizemoney
for. If you think you have won a prize,
it is your responsibility to collect it at the prizegiving. Prizes will not be forwarded. Trophy winners
from last year are requested to return their trophies.

Assembly area.
The assembly area is the
same as for the individual- the layout is shown below. The marked ridge is a
substantial sanddune 5m high. It
provides a high-level stadium-type overview of the route to the last control
and run in. Spectators may also stand
at ground level by the run in. We ask
that apart from the organisers, tents be kept in the region behind the
sand-ridge.
Here is a properly filled-in
registration form. Fiona Fitt lost her
SI card on day 1 and has borrowed one.
The team is in the correct handicap (12-14) but is non-competitive because
Francis Fatso is not a member of Interlopers.
